Our 12th Anniversary in 2019
We recruited some new members again this year, through the website.
Unfortunately we've made no further progress towards a third court, despite planning consent in place since July 2016; building estimates remain too high and we've struggled for best advice on an alternative means of construction.
The monthly leagues, organised by Mike Thomas, are reasonably well supported and our Teams continued to do well throughout the 2018-19 season.
Club's 2019 AGM
The Annual General Meeting of the Squash Club was held on 29 May and considered the latest position for a Third Court; the level of subscriptions and light card fees for the following 12 months, as well as the election of officers for 2019-20.
Highlights were for both the annual subscriptions and light card fees to remain unchanged.
Note of 2019 AGM
The Members,Subscriptions for 2019-20 were due from 1st June.
This followed the recent AGM where it was agreed again to hold fees in all categories, as follows:
* Seniors - £90.
* Juniors / Students - £40
[2 children from a family - £60].
* Family - £110.
Light Cards will remain at £3-00 per 45 minute session.
Some highlights from 2019 ...
Tesco Bags of Help Scheme
We were very grateful that the Squash Club was accepted as part of the Tesco Bags of Help Scheme; a grant scheme where three local projects went forward to a customer vote at the Tesco Wrexham store.
For this unique opportunity, our application was made on the basis of the Club's commitment to growing the sport of squash, encouraging greater participation for all and, in particular, with local young people.
We were pleased to achieve a grant of £1,000 and the practical support from the Scheme is now assisting plans for junior development, to help ensure this remains sustainable, through the recruitment and development of new coaches, as well as the on-going development and accreditation of our existing coaches.
Some funding also provide some support to parents accompanying juniors to tournaments organised by Wales Squash, our National Governing Body, in South Wales or abroad.
Squash in New York for Treasurer
Our Club Treasurer, Kevin Jones, had a New Year treat at the 2019 Tournament of Champions, held in New York City during January at the iconic Vanderbilt Hall, in Grand Central Station.
Kev watched all of the world's top players, who were battling for this top acolade in professional squash. While there, he met up with World Ranked No 10, Tesni Evans from Rhyl and the former World Champion, Nick Matthew.

We were pleased to host a Wales Squash Course for the Level One Coaching Award on 16 February.
The Club is keen to encourage the development of our junior players, as well as looking to the future for potential coaches. Eleven candidates enrolled for the course, with eight of them juniors!
Under the guidance of Wales Squash High Performance Coach, Andrew Evans, the candidates had a wide range of squash playing ability but all had an interest in taking further the coaching elements.
Our thanks to Andrew and all involved on what was a stimulating day.

Our 2019 event would be played as part of the Club Championships, around mid-June.
Vandalism at the Club
An act of serious vandalism occured at the Squash Club over the weekend 6-7 April, affecting the Mens toilet area.
We do not know how these individuals gained access, but we took the precaution of altering the security code to the entrance; Members were asked to remain vigilant when attending the Club and ensure security of premises when leaving.

An "Australian" Master
On 9 May we welcomed to the Club John Prichard, an interesting chap from the other side of the world.
Eighty one year old John was born in Wrexham but, for the last sixty years, had worked around the world, the last fifty in Australia (home in the City of Adelaid, South Australia).
John played in the 2018 World Masters Squash Championships in Charlottesville, Virginia, U.S.A. where he reached the Quarter Finals of the Mens Over 80s but lost out to the No 1 seed and eventual winner, England's Lance Kinder.
While staying in Wrexham, John was getting in some practice matches at the Club as well as getting to see again some old sites across North Wales; but then he was off to Hull to compete in the 2019 British Masters (21 - 26 May).
UPDATE: John finished in Third Place, having beaten the No 3 seed but losing to the top seed and eventual winner, Michael Gough from USA.
John's still keen to play at 81

Condition Game Challenge
Two fine trophies were played for in the Condition Game Challenge which took place on 25 May.
It was a disappointing entry for our end of season fun Challenge, which was won by Asley Piele with Jim Tunley as Runner-up and Cameron Dennis in Third Place.

Another spate of vandalism
Over the evening of 5/6 July, some mindless vandalism took place at the Squash and Cricket Clubs; it resulted in our main entrance door being forced open and beers sprayed around the court areas. The Police have attended and evidence has been taken away.
Until a new door was installed, entrance to the Club had to be made via the Cricket Pavilion. Because the arrangement required doors to be unlocked and locked again later, we had to restrict court time each day to between 4.00 and 8.30 pm.
Hannah steps up ...
On 14 July, Hannah Davies took part in an Ultra White Collar Boxing match for Cancer Research UK at Chester Racecourse.
This fantastic challenge was Hannah's latest to raise as much money as possible to help towards finding a cure.
In her words - "Getting punched in the face was nothing compared to what my friends and family members have all gone through or are still going through".
Despite being knocked down in the first round, Hannah got up to win the contest - well done.
Training is world class ...
World ranked No. 9, Tesni Evans and her father, High Performance Coach, Andrew Evans, were guests of the Club on 30 July, to go through a tough coaching session of racket and fitness routines.
In 2019, Tez retained her British Ladies Championship.

Security updated
Following on from the serious vandalism in early July that had caused members to keep their squash play within restricted hours, a new door and electronic keypad for entry was eventually fitted on 15 August.
Defibrillator installed
Great news, at long last ... we had a new Automated External Defibrillator (AED) available for emergency use at the Squash Club.
While we hope that this will never be required, it was important that a sporting club like ours does have access to such a facility.
An informal familiarity session would be arranged in due course.
Congratulations to John & Emma
From all at the Squash Club, we sent our very best wishes to John Evans and Emma Davies who were married on Sunday, 25 August.
John, with some of his Team mates, played a series of tough round robin games on the eve of his wedding !
John's ready now !

Wales take Bronze at 2019 World Team Championships
Congratulations went to the Welsh Team at the 2019 World Team Championships that took place in Washington DC over six days in December.
Seeded 11, the Welsh Team created headlines by reaching the Semi Finals. They lost 2-1 to the top seeded Egyptian Team, who went on to take the Championship title.

Hannah is our Fast & Furious Champion
An excellent day of our 2019 Fast & Furious Challenge saw finalists, Hannah Davies and Rob Evans battle over a single game, with Hannah coming through to take it 11-5.
Over the day on 5 January, there were some excellent games, in particular from the juniors who had taken part; thanks to everyone for their support.

Congratulations to our North Wales Ladies, captained by Hannah Davies, who won through innto the next round of the England Squash Inter Counties at Sheffield in January 2019.
They had a strong 5-0 win over Merseyside as well as a 3-2 win over Nottinghamshire.
UPDATE: Our Ladies Team played in the England Squash Inter Counties Finals at Nottingham on 6 April and narrowly missed promotion to the Premier Division.
They beat Cambridgeshire but lost to Warwickshire.
It was a great achievement to make it to the Finals and here's to next year !

END OF SEASON REPORT (APRIL 2019)
North East Wales League
Our First Team consolidated their position in Division 1 finishing in a comfortable mid table position. The introduction of youngsters Will Silvester & Josh Davies had been a great success, helping them gain valuable experience against older, often awkward opponents !
The Second Team, under captaincy of Paul Murphy, played very consistent squash, finishing 3rd in the Division 2. With players like Lewis Jones and Ashlie Piele improving rapidly, this team will certainly be challenging for promotion to the Division 1.
The Third Team had a new Captain in Tom Trueman (from Marc Williams, due to work commitments) had gained promotion to the Division 2. Well done guys. It's a tough season ahead next year.
Our junior team (Fourths) well marshalled by Lindsey Silvester played very well this season, with all the young players improving throughout - Jamie, Cameron, Max, David & Lewis should all be very pleased with the way they played and conducted themselves on and off the court.
North West Counties League
The First Team finished 3rd in a highly competitive Division 2. Captain, Darren Lee managed to keep a settled side together, sourcing a quality replacement in the event of player unavailability !
For the Second Team, however, it was a different story. There was a definite lack of commitment - there were some injuries but also some general apathy and the Team stuggled, finishing in the relegation zone. On a positive note, youngsters Layna Beattie & Josh Davies came in and played very well in this side. A good sign for the future.
Our Third Team finished Third in Division 3. A great team effort considering how many times players were taken out of this side to play up and help the Second Team. On a sad note we lost the services of Geraint Jones due to a long term injury. Our Juniors, Will Silvester & Josh Davies again stepped up and played a big part in the success of this side.
Overall, for a small Club we've punched above our weight once again, however, before next season we would need to have some serious discussions around the sustainability of our Teams, to ensure we have the players who are committed and playing the whole season for the Club.
MID SEASON REPORT (DECEMBER 2018)
North East Wales League
First Team - finished a comfortable second place in Division One with young Will Silvester (age 14) being introduced to the Team and performing very well. Playing at a higher level has certainly improved his game.
Second Team - they finished third in Division 2. They had chances to gain promotion but a shortage of players in important matches cost them. New Captain, Paul Murphy is doing an excellent job.
Third Team - they were relegated from Division 2 by the narrowest margin; very unlucky and didn't deserve to go down but again, in one or two crucial matches player availability was an issue. We hope they will bounce straight back up.
Fourth Team - Lindsey Silvester took on the Captaincy for this Team that mainly comprises junior players, this to give them the experience of competitive league squash. Juniors involved so far this season were - Jamie Silivester, David Thomas, Max Kaye and Cameron Dennis. All of them performed really well and are ready for a successful second half!
Matches restarted on 15th January 2019.
North West Counties League
First Team - they're placed comfortably in the top four, with consistency of players being the key to their success.
Second Team - Unlike our First Team, injuries and non-availability of key players have cost the them dearly. Presently, they are third from bottom of Division 2 and in a relegation fight which is going to be very tough to get out of unless those key players step up.
Third Team - they lie second in the Division 3 with two of our juniors, Josh Davies and Will Silvester playing an admirable part in the Team. Particularly so as injuries to key older, more experienced players could have proved disastrous to the Team had these juniors not stepped in.
Without any doubt, playing Teams Squash and in this League has considerably improved their squash - next season there's every likelihood that these two will be playing in a higher league.
Matches restarted on 3rd January 2019.
North Wales Leagues
This season we had two teams contesting the Gerald Shone Challenge Cup (this is a match between the previous season's League and North Wales Cup winning teams).
In a delayed match, this was held at the Club on 11 December between our First and Second Teams, with the First Team coming through to win it 3-2.
